Frankfurt am Main might be the smallest of Europe's big cities, but it's certainly not lacking in stature. With more than 400 international banks and an active stock exchange, Frankfurt is graced with the only skyscraper skyline in Germany. Throughout its 1,200-year history, the city has been linked to international trade, commerce and transportation, giving it a dual reputation as being business minded...and dull.
It is without a question the transportation hub of Europe: The continent's second-largest airport and busiest train station are located there. (Those who contend that the city lacks spark always point out all this transportation activity: They say it's further proof that everyone just wants to get out of town.) While many people who fly or ride the rails into Frankfurt are simply making a connection, many other travelers spend a few days there every year. For more than 600 years, Frankfurt has been one of Europe's most active host cities, welcoming scores of annual international trade fairs. With European monetary union approaching, the city is poised to play a leading role in the unfolding drama, as the home of the European Monetary Institute.
