For cars, especially used or program cars -- (honestly) I know a lot of folks that have used the internet as a locator.

Obviously, you don't purchase over the internet -- you just find out about prices and availability. A car is a big enough purchase that going out to a 300 miles radius from where you live to search for one makes sense, if you have a definite idea as to what you want. A dealer could do this for you, but in the past would tend to guide you towards where he stands to make the most profit ...
