Btw, regarding comparing Safeway with Amazon. In product they are probably similar--both sell commodity products. But in Safeway's favor, we all must eat, and if Safeway has the best closest stores, you're going to be spending money at Safeway. OTOH, Amazon offers books, which is a very low-growth biz, though a stable biz. Sometimes I have a time in my life where I read several books, and look for more--other times I don't have time to read a full book for months on end. It's no secret that the biggest book-selling season is Christmas--I guess people think that others have more time to read than they do?? :-).

In Safeway's favor, once they establish an excellent bricks-and-mortar store in a populated area, it's difficult if not impossible for a competitor to try to take their biz--I've seen it happen where a bigger grocery store has built and opened a competing store right next door to a Safeway, and guess what: The would-be competitor closed their doors after less than a year, and Safeway moved into the building :).
