On the subject of state-supported welfare: have you considered the possibility that the motivation behind such systems may not be entirely altruistic? We would not be the first to conclude that it is cheaper to subsidize the basic needs of the poor than to suppress the violence that tends to break out when those needs are not met. Bread and circuses, and all that stuff... Steve
