Stiff competition with no profits in sight. Tough times ahead for AMZN and other Web retailers, Feb 1, 1999

1. There is absolutely no loyalty when buying from Web. Every site is the same. There is no prestige nor any designer touch to buy from a particular site, except maybe when stores like Disney becomes more popular. Especially selling books and commodities.

2. Having zillions of first time customers mean nothing, other than wasting Tera-Zera bytes of storage to keep those names and addresses (no wonder not making money and needing more). Why? Because Buy.com and BriansBooks and many others sell the SAME thing for less. Who will be stupid enough to pay more money. For brick&mortar house, maybe because of the drive to the store is much closer or something else to browse in the store and therefore willing to pay a few more $s. It's like getting your gas for the car, if every gas station is the same distance, and the waiting is the same time, and the gas is the same who will be stupid to pump from a more expensive gas station.

3. Like everything else, the hype of buying through Web will die down substantially in the near future. When TV-shopping network came out some years ago, they were quite popular and now it's just so so. Outfits like Shop-At-Home are planning to go into Web-TV-streaming business which actually makes more sense as the display of many items require streaming TV type viewing.

all imo.
