Re: Fortune article I think the article states pretty well the key issues facing MSFT (although there is nothing new here). The central concern for investors is how well and fast will MSFT adapt to the changing technologies and marketplace. MSFT has a great track record for reacting to change, and most are assuming this will continue. However, does huge size and dispersion of power inevitably cause inertia to set in? On this point, in the Wall Street Journal today (2/1/99) is an excellent article interactive.wsj.com on the highly charged political decision made in 1997 by Gates to support windows and not Java. The article states that this decision was a boon for MSFT in the short run (obviously), but hints that in the long run it will hurt as other technologies obsolete Windows. I think investors should be wary of blind euphoria towards MSFT. It's great, but it's not a no-brainer.
