VLSI's New CDMA+ Single-Chip Product Ready to Ship; Market's Most Highly Integrated Solution Is a Major Step Toward 3G Solutions
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999--VLSI Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:VLSI) today announced that it expects to ship its single-chip CDMA dual-core baseband solution in March 1999.
VLSI's CDMA+(TM) is the market's most highly integrated CDMA product that provides a complete verified and supported package including the low cost, low power consuming CDMA+ Processor 100 chip, software, and debug tools.
The comprehensive package simplifies mobile phone development, provides quick time-to-market and reduces development cost and risk. CDMA+ is currently being evaluated by industry-leading handset manufacturers.
Much More Than a Chip
CDMA+ is much more than a chip. It contains all of the baseband elements needed to develop a wireless phone included in one package. This means customers can focus on bringing highly differentiated products quickly to market instead of developing all the components themselves.
The 13 QCELP Vocoder (voice coder) in the CDMA+ is the first to be successfully tested using the Modified-Methodology IS-736 Minimum Performance Standard. Passing this test is a critical step in demonstrating and delivering a high voice quality CDMA solution. VLSI is the first company to have passed this test.
Leading Wireless Chip Provider
CDMA+ joins VLSI's OneC(TM) GSM offering as products that were built on VLSI's Velocity(TM) Standard Communication Platform(TM) (SCP). This approach gives handset manufacturers a single platform solution for all major wireless standards as well as future third generation standards. CDMA+ was built on VLSI's success in the GSM and ASIC markets and is the latest innovation in a long series of global wireless products.
VLSI is the only vendor currently offering both GSM and CDMA products, reinforcing VLSI's position as a leading wireless chip provider. This also uniquely positions VLSI to address the emerging 3G standard that combines CDMA and GSM technology.
"VLSI's CDMA+ solution is a much needed alternative in the rapidly growing CDMA market," said Tom Willey, vice president of VLSI's Communication Products Group for North America.
"In today's rapidly moving market, phone manufacturers need a highly integrated solution that simplifies mobile phone development, provides quick time to market and reduces development cost and risk. The comprehensiveness of the package means that customers can focus on bringing highly differentiated products quickly to market instead of developing all the components themselves." -0- *T

A Unique, Universal Development System
CDMA+ was built using VLSI's unique Velocity SCP, an integrated, universal wireless development foundation that allows customers to develop products for multiple markets based on a common architecture and tools environment.
Velocity SCP is comprised of proven building blocks that include VLSI-enhanced embeddable ARM and DSP cores, Functional System Blocks(TM) such as I/Os, caches, interrupt controllers and UARTs, analog cells and DSP firmware. The Velocity SCP also includes integrated ARM and DSP software tools.
As a result, CDMA+ features an easily customizable architecture that allows high-volume mobile phone manufacturers to differentiate products based on a common architecture and tools environment, enabling faster product development and migration.
