Neocon, I've spent some time here on "the partial birth story" before. I don't really want to go into it again, but in short, the terminology didn't even exist before the right to life people made it up. Then there was the story that the AMA's auditors came up with after the AMA's sudden change of heart on the issue.

It's another one of these things where the "truth" is very much in the eyes of the beholder. If you want to frame the issue in the most inflammatory way possible, the PBA story is a good way to play politics. But of course, the "right to life" people would never, ever want to play politics, would they? Only Bill Clinton plays politics. I'm sure you were quite objective and detached in describing the issue to your grandmother.
