Let's see if I have this right.

In a letter of December 19, the Secretary of State, Secretary of Commerce, and the Chairman of the FCC cautioned the European Commission against “unfortunate precedent” which would be set if an exclusive regional standard were chosen prior to the ITU's standards process.

As reported in the Financial Times dated 1/19/99, the European Union, in response to this letter sent by the United States, appeared to yield a decision over 3G standardization TO THE BROADER WIRELESS INDUSTRY. This follows ERICY's announcement that is signed a memorandum of technology and industrial cooperation with China's Ministry of Information and Industry, establishing an ERICY R&D center in Beijing.

ERICY, NOK.A, and Nortel “maintain” dominant positions as suppliers to tier-one operators.

Mr. George Gilder succinctly points out in his Gilder Technology Report of January 1999 that QCOM can launch CDMA2000 without European endorsement if necessary. And goes on to say that the Europeans may well lack the technical mastery of CDMA to launch Wideband CDMA as a third generation standard within two years of QCOM's planned move next year.

So what are folks on this thread concerned about? It appears that if everyone has yielded to the “market place” and QCOM's CDMA2000 will beat W-CDMA to market, all the stops have been taken out. I guess the only question that remains is where will ERICY, NOK.A, and Nortel be in three years?

Am I missing something?
