I agree DMA, I just bring up this marriage penalty as an example of a kind of "tax credit" which is given at the expense of simplicity, just like all the other tax credits. Somehow it escapes the designation of a tax credit, which is really what it is. If somebody makes 40K, they should pay taxes on that 40K. If the person is married or not should make no difference in my ideal world, in the spirit of fairness. There are demographic trends regarding marriage, ex. younger people are more likely unmarried, of course gays are not allowed to marry, so in order to remove all these biases we need to remove them from the tax code imo.
