I must respectfully disagree.

If Clinton were a Republican the Democrats would have been screaming from the rooftops for his removal. Barbara Boxer, et all would have ganged up on him just as they did (rightly) to Bob Packwood (although Packwood never committed perjury, nor did he obstruct justice in order to avoid the consequences of his actions).

If Clinton were a Republican the Republican leadership would have gone to him and forced him to resign. If he refused they would have pursued his impeachment, just as they're doing now.

The Republicans are doing this out of conviction that nobody is above the law -- especially not the President. If Clinton gets away with the crimes he's committed the precedent will be set that, as long as you're popular, and have a rabidly partisan party supporting you, that you can ignore the law at your will. That's a recipe for disaster.
