Nice post, Tench.

Privacy is an important issue. What is lacking is not vigilance. What is lacking are the legal protections we need. When state DoTs can sell licensee information and the fact that a person got a speeding ticket or DUI to those who want to sell legal services or rehab programs to that person, we have a problem. And that is the tip of the iceberg.

And this has absolutely NOTHING TO DO WITH CPU IDs!!!

I hope the privacy groups will focus on the cure for our privacy woes instead of easy targets that gain them publicity.

I still contend that our market relationship with EU will drive this issue forward soon.

EDIT:

With some good privacy laws in place, perhaps the DoJ can occupy its time and our money by enforcing laws that protect citizens, instead of trying to stop MSFT and INTC for their alleged "harm".
