<<Analysts Predict Future

By Monica Alleven

LA JOLLA, Calif.--AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Northern Telecom Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. will be the fastest growing wireless players in the foreseeable future, according to some analysts. >>

<<John Ledahl, director and principal analyst of wireless programs at San Jose, Calif.-based Dataquest Inc., listed a handful of companies that meet the criteria for top players in the future.

In the cellular and personal communications services carrier arena, the top five slots will consist of AT&T Corp., Sprint PCS, PrimeCo Personal Communications LP, NextWave Telecom Inc./MCI Communications Corp. and members of the PCS 1900 Alliance. >>

<<As for vendors, Ledahl predicted Lucent Technologies Inc., Ericsson Inc., Nortel, Motorola Inc. and Nokia Corp. will be the top five in the cellular and PCS systems market. Top five handset vendors will be Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, Qualcomm and Lucent. Motorola and NEC Corp. most likely will lose analog market share, while Ericsson and Nokia will pick up, he said. >>

<<He said CDMA will be the dominant U.S. standard in handsets, although global system for mobile communications technology will remain No. 1 worldwide. Small, "reasonably priced" analog phones likely will prove successful as well, he said. >>

<<Nortel is a good bet as the No. 2 U.S. wireless network vendor, he said, adding his "wild card" prediction is Ericsson will introduce its own spread spectrum technology within the next year or two. "Ericsson is just too smart a company ... not to recognize the benefits of spread spectrum," he said. >>
