I suppose that coloured boxes are a good marketing idea. It lets people personalize the exterior of their computer. But, to an old hat like me I don't mind about the colour.

Your post got me thinking though, manufacturing computers with different coloured boxes would fit in perfectly well with DELL's business model! If they could get their chassis suppliers lined up to produce and ship the colours required based on orders that Dell will be building, they would avoid having to stock thousands of boxes of each colour in inventory. It again shows the power of the build to order model.

I've actually seen something like this in the auto industry. Seats are made to order and SEQUENCED according to the order at the seat manufacturer. They then are shipped to the assembly line and rolled off the truck in exactly the order in which they will be installed into cars coming down the line. I mean, if Detroit can do it, DELL can do it better!
