SAP is an database applications firm. They do not sell the database engine so they do not compete against SQL Sever 7. SAP does run on SQL Sever 7 but Oracle is the prefer choice of SAP.

There are several major problems with Linux. First, there are no standards. 2 Linux sites can be totally different making the need for Linux support very costly. Next, it is hard to find Linux support. Also, those major companies that you mention all want their own standards in Linux and the geeks and everyone else are trying to put their own standards in it. This is really a problem. The geeks want no one to dominate Linux. But it is a competitor to NT.
