Bad precedence: Iridium LLC [IRIDF] yesterday (2/1) received permission from the government of Sri Lanka to operate its global
telecommunications service on the island, as long as the company excludes the country's war zones from satellite coverage.

Sri Lanka's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) promised Iridium a frequency license under an agreement with
Iridium that it will not permit calls to be made or received in the country's embattled North and East. The government insisted on
that proviso because of "national security considerations."

Guerrillas fighting government troops already operate Inmarsat satellite phones, but the TRC is in talks with Inmarsat to try to
cease coverage. That would be difficult because Inmarsat cannot restrict coverage to a particular geographical area.

How do they 'not permit' calls from a small geographic area? I* should not be in big brother's pocket. Too bad I* chose to sell its soul for what 3 or 4 users in a backwater country which has been in a civil war for years and years. Sad, very sad.
