Crys-Tel Telecommunications Chooses Nokia IP Telephony Platform for International Multimedia Network
KANATA, Ontario, Canada--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1999--Nokia (NYSE:NOK.A - news), a leading Internet Protocol Telephony solutions provider, Tuesday announced that Crys-Tel Telecommunications Inc. (OTC BB:CYSS - news) has chosen the Nokia platform to build an international multimedia network that will ultimately connect more than 200 points-of-presence (POPs) worldwide.
The Nokia IP Telephony platform includes advanced call-processing software, back-office technologies, IP-to-PSTN gateways, client applications and IP devices. The distributed nature of this platform allows carriers such as Crys-Tel to rapidly implement networks that span continents, while managing and maintaining the network from a single location.
The first phase of Crys-Tel's network rollout, which has been in place and handling commercial traffic since November 1998, targets European international calling areas. Subsequent phases of the project will extend the network to include domestic traffic within European countries and POPs in strategic areas of Australia and Asia.
''We enable retail customers, consortium partners, as well as other carriers, to direct international voice and FAX traffic over our network at significantly reduced rates,'' said Edward Yau, president of Crys-Tel Telecommunications.
''Nokia's unique distributed architecture, experience in deploying networks of this size and complexity, as well as their strong partnership attributes, match our business plans both today and into the future,'' said Yau.
''In this exploding market, carriers require a reliable, scalable foundation on which to rapidly build cutting-edge networks that can deliver multiple services,'' said T. Kent Elliott, vice president and general manager, Nokia IP Telephony. ''We are very pleased to be working with Crys-Tel and know that their deployment of the Nokia solution will give them the competitive edge they need.''
