Hi, Henry, I.N., Mark, Rich, Billy Ray, Hung, Pallisard, and everyone else heading to the meeting in Henderson,
First, it looks like there may be as many as a dozen of us at the meeting -- enough for a decent party if we get good news; enough for a well-represented wake if we don't. I hope we can get together in either case, both before and after the meeting.
Henry proposed we meet at Henderson's Sunset Station Casino in the coffee shop at 1:30 before the meeting. I have spoken with several of you about this, and all seem open to the idea. I haven't heard from Pallisard about this proposed "invasion" of his hotel, but I presume he can live with it, so I propose we meet there in the "Sunset Cafe" at 1:30. I will wear a red strip tie, and I think Henry will have a big "V" on the table. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Meeting you is becoming a more important reason all the time for going all the way to Henderson, Nevada for coffee and donuts.
Here are directions from McCarren airport in Las Vegas to Sunset Station and Valence in Henderson. This route is not the most direct way, but is the simplest.
Interstate 215 leads from the airport to Interstate 15. But however you get to I-15, take I-15 north (toward Salt Lake -- not Los Angeles) to downtown Las Vegas. (Downtown LV is not the Strip.) It's about 7 miles from I-215 to downtown. On the far edge of the downtown, take I-515 (which is also US 95 & US 93) south toward Henderson and Boulder City.
In about 10 miles or so, you will come to the Sunset Road exit where you should see the Sunset Station Casino (1301 W. Sunset Rd, 702-547-7777). I think it's on the left side of 515, but I forget. You can't miss it, though, but if you see the Lake Mead Drive exit, you've gone too far.
To get to Valence, continue on I-515 toward Boulder City. When you cross Lake Mead Drive, you're in the middle of Henderson. Continue on I-515 to its very end, which is maybe another 6 miles or so, and you're there. Almost. The end of I-515 is not a dead-end; the highway continues as an ordinary 4-lane divided highway (US 95 & 93) toward Boulder City. As you begin to get toward the end of civilization, be watching the buildings on the frontage road on the right.
This point where I-515 turns into US 95/93 is easy to recognize because it is more or less adjacent to the last building on the right before its all desert ahead and you're getting close to leaving the Las Vegas valley. That last building, on the other side of a frontage road along the highway but set back 200 yards or so from the highway, is Valence. It faces the highway; with (very) good eyes you can see the name on the front. I think it's still the last building...the building just before is a Levi's facility, and there may be another building beyond Valence, but it's set way back toward the mountain, as I remember... In any case, take the exit just beyond the "last" building, which is Foothills Dr., I believe. Turn right onto Foothills, toward the mountain, go to the first right (maybe 1/8 mile), which is Car Country Rd, and take it for perhaps 1/8 mile until you see Conestoga Way on the right. Follow Conestoga a 1/4 mile or so around the bend to the first building on the left, & voila, you're there. It's just as easy as it sounds. Remember, you can always see it from the highway, and it's pretty much the very last bit of civilization before leaving the valley. Valence is truly on the leading edge -- at least if you're coming from Boulder City.
See you all Thursday.
