I wasn't referring to this particular misstatement of Les's, more other long running "substantive debates" I've had of late with him. I don't know if you've commented on the Reagan-era deficits, always blandly dismissed here as Congress's fault. The Reagan defense runnup certainly wouldn't normally be blamed on Congress, nor the original Kemp-Roth tax cuts. The magnitude of cuts it would have taken to balance the budget after this is, shall we say, impressive. I think there were years you could have eliminated all of the federal government besides SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Defense, and interest on the debt in those days, and still had a deficit. Plus, Reagan had the pleasant gift of Moynihan's '83 SS "rescue" to keep the numbers down.
