Hope this is what you wanted BAM.....
How about a hypothetical construction?, simplified (s) .....
A corp. organization for one reason or another plans to make a move for expansion. Its only connection with the "net" to date, is a "site", maybe hosted by an ISP; similar to the thousands already existing; announcing their presence to the world...."Look, here I am"
With plans for a merger or acquisition, more communications infrastructure will be needed with concentration in the networking side of things. So company sites will become more than billboards. They will become integral portals to the co.'s partners, divisions, sections and for its customers. And you become your own host.
Servers that present these sites on the net, need identification and an address. Thus InterNIC, Network Solutions. They, for a fee, assign and register a domain address and name ( … … … . ), known as a DNS to each. These domain names (ampex.com axcite.com ) become yours exclusively, to do with what you want. The domain name becomes an icon, trademark and brand in the world of the net.
You then construct software, hardware for these servers to fit your needs. Just internet stuff. Or inter-intranet stuff. Intra being for corp. (private also) use with access only by password, encryption through firewalls etc. etc.
Ampex has registered these dozen names, and it seems two more since last week. Check internic.net
AXCG.NET AXCENTWEB.NET ACCENTNETWORKS.NET AXCENTWEB.COM AXCENTNETWORKS.COM AXCENTNETWORKS.NET ACCENTNETWORKS.COM ACCENTGROUP.NET AMPEX.NET AXCG.COM AXCENTGROUP.NET AMPEX.COM
Excite has registered AXCITE.COM within the last week.
They are located just around the corner from each other. And @Home is building next door to Excite.
1+1+1+1 = Ampex + Tvontheweb + @Home + Excite = whoe !
Good business, Big business. If this is true....
