Lucent, MCI Worlcom Likely Stk-Split Candidates: Analyst
Dow Jones Newswires February 2, 1999
NEW YORK -- Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) and MCI Worldcom Inc. (WCOM) are likely stock-split candidates, a market analyst for Standard & Poor's says.
In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Kevin Gooley, analyst for S&P's PersonalWealth.com, said that, in general, stock splits indicate a company's own confidence in its future. But now, amid Internet-related companies with no earnings, a stock split's meaning is trickier, he said.
"So many of them (Internet-related stocks) are splitting now it gets to be somewhat of a question." Gooley said.
He also offered tips on spotting likely stock splits, saying investors should focus on stock prices that have run up and on companies with a history of splitting their stocks.
Although it's no guarantee, stocks that split over the long term outperform those that don't split, Gooley added
