Merck, Others May Face Sales Surge on Y2K Hoarding, WSJ Says

Bloomberg News
February 2, 1999, 9:13 a.m. ET

New York, Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Merck & Co., SmithKline
Beecham Plc and other pharmaceutical companies may face a surge
in sales related to consumers stockpiling drugs because of fears
the Year 2000 computer bug may disrupt prescriptions, the Wall
Street Journal reported. Merck is studying sales patterns to
detect signs of hoarding, which could strain drug makers'
capacity if they're forced to meet a sudden increase in demand,
said Charles Popper, Merck's chief information officer. Drug
makers and distributors are developing common procedures for
taking orders manually and processing claims in case of computer
problems, the paper said.

Merck, Aetna Inc. and about 38 other health-care companies
have joined together to collaborate on plans for addressing the
Year 2000 computer bug, which stems from the inability of some
software to distinguish between 1900 and 2000.
