How have Democrats staked their reputation on Clinton? Nobody gives him credit for anything but a moderate degree of political effectiveness. Nobody defends his distasteful personal life. I will respectfully spare you my canonical Time magazine quote.

I think the predominant argument for not convicting Clinton is that the offenses don't rise to impeachable level, which is hardly a ringing endorsement. Starr had his shot on all the other litany of allegations, and given the somewhat distasteful methods he was willing to use without much to show for it, expecting much new damage seems questionable. Or maybe he can get Julie Steele to back up Kathleen Willey and a bunch of other Jane Doe stories. Who can say?

The new line that the impeachment fallout for Republicans will be forgotten in a month, or 10 seconds, or whatever, but the long term fallout for Democrats will be deadly, is, I don't know, inconsistent? I'd guess most everybody will be glad not to have Clinton to kick around after the Y2K election. Playing Clinton for Republican political purposes after that seems pretty hypothetical to me. Do you think Starr dragging Clinton through the courts for years after the 2000 election will somehow prove to be hugely popular politically?
