Wireless Application Protocol Forum
PRNewswire

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ --
As part of its commitment to bringing advanced
wireless solutions to the market, [ Lucent
Technologies ] today announced it has joined the
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum (www.wapforum.org). This
international industry body aims to create a global wireless protocol
specification to bring advanced services and Internet access to digital mobile
telephone users, regardless of the network protocol used.

Chuck Parrish, WAP Forum Board Chairman, said: "We are pleased to
welcome Lucent Technologies to the WAP Forum. Lucent's background as a
player in every global wireless standard makes it a valuable addition to the
WAP Forum's membership."

Nitin Shah, Lucent's vice president-wireless data networks, said: "This is an
extremely exciting time to be in the wireless data market. To be competitive
you have to be innovative, but innovation alone will not guarantee commercial
success. We believe that our customers will benefit most from solutions that
take advantage of the power of the Internet. For this reason, we have decided
to become a member of the WAP Forum."

He added: "We believe the development of an applicatio protocol that blends
the Internet with wireless technologies will benefit every facet of the industry,
including users, network operators and service providers. Lucent has a great
deal of experience in providing solutions for every wireless telecommunication
standard, and as such we are ideally placed to work with the WAP Forum to
evolve the Wireless Application Protocol."

Lucent is a major player in many of the standards organizations throughout the
world, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the
European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) and the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI). In the wireless data arena, Lucent
Technologies has leadership roles in the IEEE 802.11 and ETSI BRAN
(Broadband Radio Access Network) committees.

Lucent is also active in industry associations as co-founder of the UMTS
Forum and as a board member of the Wireless Data Forum, the Universal
Wireless Communications Consortium, and the CDMA Development Group

In addition, the company is participating in a number of programs aimed at
developing the next generation of mobile communications systems, including
the Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) program
and the European Strategic Program for Information Technology (ESPRIT).

WAP specifies Internet content and advanced telephony services access on
digital cellular phones and other wireless terminals. The WAP Forum has
published a global wireless protocol specification for all wireless networks that
will be presented to appropriate standards bodies. WAP enables
manufacturers, network operators, content providers and application
developers to offer compatible products and secure services on all digital
devices and networks. This results in greater economies of scale and universal
access to information. WAP Forum membership is open to all industry
participants, and the WAP version 1.0 specification and membership details
are available at wapforum.org
