Tuesday February 2, 8:31 am Eastern Time / Company Press Release
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1999--Bernard Vavala, chairman of America Mineral Fields Inc. (TSE:AMZ - news; ''the Company''), is pleased to announce that Tim Read of London, England, has been appointed President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of the Company.
Read, 52, was, until recently, a managing director of Investment Banking for Merrill Lynch International, based in London with specific responsibility for metals and mining investment banking. He has over 30 years of experience in the mining investment sector, initially as a highly respected mining analyst and latterly as an investment banker. During the past 15 months, while employed by Merrill Lynch and subsequently, Read provided strategic advice to the Company on a range of issues and was instrumental in the establishment of the joint venture agreement with Anglo American Corporation with respect to the proposed development of the Kolwezi tailings deposit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Vavala commented, ''We are delighted that Tim has agreed to assume overall responsibility for the Company at this pivotal time in its development. His extensive investment banking experience will be essential in the capital funding of our various projects, most particularly the Kolwezi project.''
Vavala relinquishes the role of Chief Executive Officer, which he assumed temporarily on the resignation of Steve Malouf in December, but remains Chairman of the Board.
Read has assumed operational control of the Company with immediate effect and will undertake a comprehensive review of the Company's operations and assets during the next few weeks.
