Well we've got ROCK the NET and now let's head for THE BORDER:

From today's IBD site, a portion of a short interview with Mr. Marengi:

IBD:

What plans does Novell have for the so-called ''gray zone'' where intranets - corporate networks based on
Internet standards - connect to the Internet?

Marengi:

I don't want to give too much away. . . . We're calling (that zone) the border - (and we'll have) BorderWare
(Novell products for the border). (BorderWare) will provide significant intranet performance increases.

The problem is, employees are accessing the Internet from different points and tying up bandwidth. (But) the
network could start working from a single point, getting all the information down into this incredibly fast,
specialized engine that shoots it onto the Internet.

(Then) employees could continue to work at local-area-network speeds and let this device in the middle do all the
work for them. Also, you can control which ites and servers) the employee talks to out on the Internet with this
device.

IBD:

When will this product be available? Will it be hardware or software?

Marengi:

Hopefully we'll have it shipping by the middle of the year. We'll build an entire service around the border. It will
be strictly software from us. But obviously we'll be looking for partners to put the whole thing in a box.

IBD:

Have you been talking with equipment makers such as Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hewlett-Packard Co.?

Marengi:

Yes. What they're looking for are new opportunities to sell machines. The majority of ISPs use Unix machines
(like those from HP), and BorderWare could be a good front-end device.
