Hitachi To Release Consumer DVD-Video Recorder In 2000

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Hitachi Ltd. (6501) plans to begin marketing a DVD-Video recorder in Japan and the U.S. by the end of 2000.

DVD-Video recorders employ DVD-RW (rewritable) technology, already used in personal computers, to allow both recording and playback of television broadcasts and movies. Hitachi is the first Japanese maker to follow the lead of Philips Electronics NV, which has already announced that it will release a DVD-Video recorder in 2000.

The DVD-Video recorder currently under development at Hitachi will support both 2.6-gigabyte and 4.7GB disks. Using digital recording technology, it will offer up to eight hours of video recording on a single 4.7GB disk -- four hours on each side -- with quality that surpasses that of existing videotapes.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752), Sony Corp. (6758) and other Japanese consumer-electronics makers are expected to follow suit in entering the new product area. Hitachi is also developing a DVD-Video camera for recording video on 8cm disks with 3.0GB of capacity.
