I think I've posted this before, but I think there may be a fundamental shift going on in the toy buying population. Several articles I've seen talk about age compression. Children are outgrowing toys at younger and younger ages. Also, they favor more interactive toys now. The old stand-bys are losing popularity. To the degree that Mattel stays on or in front of the innovation curve they should be fine - and TLC may be a move in that direction. But to a large degree owning the old stand-bys was the attractiveness of the investment - and arguably the franchise value is declining for the older toys.
