VoXML won't make development easier, just access. Just like document storage, voice files have to either be indexed or interpreted as text, in the document example with OCR. Key players here are Dragon IBM & HL for continuous and a ton of others including the latest VC sweetheart Nuance for limited vocabulary. I see two plays here. Text to speech--boring and a ton of stuff out there now and the second is interaction with browsers. But NOT voice response, but rather data! Don't forget once you send your query by voice, you still have to evaluate the response and act. Voice is really a step back for this. Receiving short but critical pieces of information is valuable, but anything that requires thought while you are driving down the road or that interupts your digestion may be a hazard. But I have a bias, we are designing one to front end high volume websites and call centres. Initial focus on Travel, Telco/ISP, Financial--high velocity, short shelf life items. Look at the other ACCESS initiatives www.uplanet.com Unwired Planet and www.symbian.com the PSION joint venture with EVERYBODY All of these guys can get access to voice applications YESTERDAY VoXML has XML in the name, another flavour of the month for VC's It's a Silicon Valley thing, you scratch my technology and I'll scratch yours. Standards are good, approach is OK, the key is newness which gives market opportunity to shift to new players and stock prices to move! General Magic needs voice to differentiate their ability to ACCESS as the current browser/java market is very thick with competitors. Problem here is that in about 3 months voXML will (at least in the brochures)be everywhere and the development lagtime of one to three years for the server side may be significant. And then you have SUN which just bought Bedouin a Canadian company which have a Java brower for wireless phones etc...Browser+Phone.
