HP Jornada 820
Continued from previous page
At first glance most people will think the HP Jornada 820 is a subnotebook. This most conventional-looking of the first wave of H/PC Pro devices looks like a slightly underfed notebook; it has a clamshell design and a touch pad. Jornada is Spanish for journey, but the company wants you to pronounce it "Jornada," not "Hornada." The Jornada's expected street price of $1,000 includes a 56K V.90 internal modem. If you prefer a touch pad to a touch screen and want a conventional notebook-style design, the Jornada 820 is a likely candidate with an unexpected name.
Hewlett-Packard plans to sell the Jornada 820 to corporate customers, who will use it for mobile productivity and for keeping in touch with the office, particularly for accessing e-mail and centrally located information. The Jornada 820 is powered by a 190-MHz Intel StrongARM processor and comes standard with 16MB of RAM, upgradable to 32MB, and 16MB of burst-mode ROM. In addition to the near-standard Type II CompactFlash and PC Card slots, the Jornada 820 has a USB port and XVGA-out for connection to an external monitor.
The 1.3- by 9.5- by 6.8-inch (HWD) Jornada 820 weighs 2 pounds 10 ounces with the 10-hour-rated lithium ion battery installed and 3 pounds 4.4 ounces if you add the AC adapter. The QWERTY keyboard's layout, which has 17-mm key spacing, is broad enough that many people will feel comfortable using the Jornada 820 for moderate typing or data entry. A series of task keys are located in the top row of the keyboard as well.
The 8.2-inch-diagonal 256-color 640-by-480 display was clear on the test model, and the touch pad action was smooth and responsive. The display measures 5 inches wide and 6.6 inches high. Not having a touch screen on a Windows CE device took some getting used to, but the additional resistive layer required for a touch screen adds to the cost and dims the screen slightly.
The Jornada 820's AC, CompactFlash, and serial ports are on the right edge; the PC Card slot and a ROM upgrade slot are on the left; and the XVGA, USB, infrared, and RJ-11 ports, as well as a Kensington security slot, are on the back of the device. The unit's speaker and microphone are located on the palm rest.
In addition to the standard Windows CE software, HP includes Sierra Imaging's Image Editor CE (see the sidebar "Image Expert CE--a Defining Digital Tool for Windows CE") and HP Jornada Viewer for searching for data across PIM applications. Bundled software includes LandWare's OmniSolve and Bsquare's bFAX Pro and bFIND. HP TopTools Agent is also included for system management for the DMI-compliant Jornada 820. REX and REX PRO users will also be able to use the bundled TrueSync CE 2.0 for plug-and-play synchronization of Pocket Outlook data.
The Jornada 820 kit includes two 3V backup batteries, the 10-hour standard lithium ion battery, and AC adapter, and a serial PC synchronization cable. Options include extended-life batteries ($189), CompactFlash memory cards, RAM upgrades (16MB, $79), and parallel and printer cables ($49).
Jornada is the new brand for the HP Windows CE hand-held line. The familiar shape and user interface of the Jornada 820 should ease its acceptance in corporate applications. |
