(and Arrow Hd) I reviewed some earlier posts, the MIFGY WebPage, and the MIFGY news. I agree that Web-enabling is going on and will grow. MIFGY has great tools. If I ask about PVCS, I expect to hear Version control from the oldtimers. Learn Cobol in 21 days was a best-seller in 1997 and may have been sparked by a Y2K anticipated explosion (which never came to pass). In a large IBM mainframe shop (current events), IBM MQ is used to transport data from the mainframe to other platforms. The mainframe application (of say 65 COBOL programs) requires a 66th program to retreive data; it doesn't require the existing 65 to be modified. The destination platforms are not likely to use Cobol. Of the SEVEN companies (MIFGY WEB Site) using DirectSequ??, FIVE are Software resellers, developers, practitioners,.. MIFGY appears to be able to concentrate on OEM business (which is fine) and my point is that they are not a common and highly visible company in the average dp department. I only raise doubts about this "transition". MIFGY could interface to Windows, VB, C, etc many years ago - but I don't know anyone doing such interfacing - They may have some of the greatest middleware, but what about CA (OPAL, Jasmine), BEAS, SIMWF, NOVL, IBM, RATL. BTW, I attended a Y2K conference in Chicago a year ago. I don't recall MIFGY being there. But RATL really captured the audience with component-based development. Bottom line is I look for MIFGY to make a mark in the OEM world, not the average joe programmer-company dp shop world. IF COBOL, then certainly MIFGY, but if Web-enable, then MANY players. |
