Bonnie: when I was back in China in 1993, my sister just got a new pager (Motorola) which cost $750 US dollars. Of course, her company paid for her. And monthly charge was extra. And another brother-in-law of mine got a company's cell phone, which cost at that time >$3,000 US dollars. Of course, now I would say they are much cheaper, but compared to the price here in the US, they are still much more expensive. How much a pager cost here? Even if in 1993, I would say <$50 dollars. You have no idea how expensive the things cost in China. And black market in China mostly deals with currencies, or gas, or tobacco, not electronics.
