I just listened to the CSCO CC and was not too impressed.

They keep talking about IP and Data-Voice-Video Integration, which is their current focus, and of course how great they are with #1 or #2 in every market they are in. 12 acquisitions and 13 new products announced in the last year, etc. GM continue to decline. They mention LU-ASND and in almost the same breath say that most big mergers will fail. It's like they just dismiss them (bravado perhaps?) when they make a very strong competitor.

Interestingly they made the comment "It's no longer big vs small, it's fast vs slow", yet I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the words Optical or Optical Networking, Fiber Optic, ASIC, DWDM or Metro networks were mentioned at all in over 1 hour. They have little or no Fiber Optic products and apparently no R&D in that area. I wonder how cohesive their R&D can be when it is spread across many purchased companies? This just HAS to hurt them going forward - and with an 80-90 PE there is a lot to hurt.

In fact a CSCO employee who posts on SI said this on the CSCO thread tonight:

"Listwin mentioned that DWDM is becoming commoditized and is being reduced into chipsets. That would lead me to believe that they will integrate this technology onto existing products - where it makes sense. Until then they will continue to partner with DWDM manufacturers.

Sounds like the optical advantage isn't much of one"

Is it just me or do they seem to be missing a key (vital) area for the future?
