To the Group: New TVW home page design...

As promised in TVW's broadcast of last week, new home page has been posted.

Let me recommend that all visit TVW and sign up for email notification of new events.

From an esthetic and usability standpoint, the new site is an improvement over its predecessor. I make the following observations, however:

1) Extensive inclusion of graphic elements slows down TVW; page load time on a dial-up line now unacceptable. (People like CNET have tweaked the graphics content of their sites such that no primary page exceeds about 15k of graphics, as I recall.) As more new channels are implemented, the page will simply grind to a halt. Buttons unnecessary, run-on text.

2) How does TVW come up and how does it look for Mac users?

3) "Narrowcasting to the World" small and very hard to read. Not enough contrast. (Frankly, would prefer "Narrowcast.com" as the name...apparently owned by Narrowcast Technologies, Inc. Buy 'em!).

4) Stylized "eye" logo awkward, tough to implement in collaterals, not preemptive. From certain perspectives, looks a lot like jewelry offerings I didn't buy at "Shop at Home!"

5) Miniature billboards are good, but add overhead. Remember, advertisers will need it, too.

If I had to make one overall observation, I'd say the site lacks a strong metaphor. It's, well, "homegrown." TVW requires preemptive brand identity to establish "ownership" of community-based narrowcasting. Mission-critical asset. That's what's for sale to channel sponsors for big dough. (Just ask the Marlboro Man!)

Dave, Lisa and Co. need us to beat this up, Group. No egos in it. Want your comments.

And while we're on it, what are some of your nominations for effective Web site designs?
