Intel Offers Funds to NEC/Toshiba/M'bishi Electric

Feb 02, 1999, (Comline via COMTEX) -- NEC (6701), Toshiba (6502) and
Mitsubishi Electric (6503) say that Intel has offered them funds. The
giant U.S. chipmaker plans to launch the Pentium 3 this summer, but the
company fears a shortage of high-speed products, namely Rambus DRAMs,
because chipmakers in Japan and Korea are cutting capital investment.
The new Pentium 3 needs more than the conventional DRAM. Funds extended
to the three Japanese companies could be used to expand production
systems accordingly. Neither Toshiba nor NEC have said if they will
accept Intel's offer. Toshiba has its own capital investment plan, and
NEC is considering wide-ranging fund-procurement options during the
market slump. Mitsubishi Electric has declined the offer.
