I've been looking for links to your suggestions and it's been interesting, but I've yet to turn up an obvious match for competition.
I say obvious because the Symbian and Unwired planet are definitely interesting, but they seem geared toward making phones into computers using limited screens to handle a GUI. The mention of voice doesn't seem to come up, but of course I could spend days reading these sites and still not find it because it's still an internal project.
But, that's what you are saying, "the second is interaction with browsers. But NOT voice response, but rather data!"
It seems like in a perfect world, we would have a great graphics screen and some intuitive way to enter data that would be totally seamless with anybody in any environment, but we can't have that.
The VUI has its place. It's a different way of dealing with data. The smart phone will probably enhance it, or vice versa, but in the end there will be great applications for total voice interactive browsing.
Here the question is can it be done and how can it be done. Yes, the Auto PC wants to get the closest Mexican restaurant, but also give you some choice with perhaps a review. How can you do this while driving down the highway?
Companies like L&H, Dragon, and Nuance and Speechworks all require a lot of on board processing power, and a really great microphone. The VUI used to Browse the Net with a phone is able to take all the on board expensive equipment and shift it to a Network Operations Center. Then, you can use a pay phone, kiosk, or whatever is handy in addition to your incredible smart phone.
I've looked for a link to Bedouin and Sun, but couldn't find it. Can you give me a link?
<General Magic needs voice to differentiate their ability to ACCESS as the current browser/java market is very thick with competitors. Problem here is that in about 3 months voXML will (at least in the brochures)be everywhere and the development lagtime of one to three years for the server side may be significant.>
I read through the UP and EPOC links and somewhere they mentioned ACCESS, but I couldn't find a direct link to ACCESS. I had the feeling that again this was a smart phone initiative that was GUI oriented?
<Don't forget once you send your query by voice, you still have to evaluate the response and act. Voice is really a step back for this. Receiving short but critical pieces of information is valuable, but anything that requires thought while you are driving down the road or that interupts your digestion may be a hazard.>
Yes! This is the element that General Magic provides with their MagicTalk platform. The actual front and back end of the system, which is Speech Recognition and TTS or recorded dialogs, are only parts of the equation. The dialog and processing and information gathering are critical to making this VUI work. When you have graphics, a picture says a thousand words, and getting people to talk with a computer are the challenge.
But the interface is an amazingly powerful one when you can find the right blend of application to demand.
I see this is your first post. What brings you to this thread and do you think the technology is workable? You sound skeptical.
