While part of me thinks the "trend" away from the traditional concept of toys looks a lot like the conventional wisdom a year ago that Nike is no longer cool, Mattel is more than old-fasioned toys. Even without the acquisition of The Learning Company, Mattel had seven of the top ten children's software titles last year. The Barbie web site is just excellent, and is really ramping up sales quickly. As long as they stay with the trends, Mattel's market power gives them a huge advantage. Conventional wisdom is that they are relying on their old toys only, which is just not true.
