Ericsson datacom solution live in Telia GSM net

Using an Ericsson solution, Swedish operator Telia Mobile became one of the
first operators in the world to trial a new datacom platform live in its GSM
network.

With HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) operators can for the first time
offer consumers rapid delivery of large amounts of data over GSM networks.

It's also an important step in the evolution of GSM to handle higher data
speeds. The technology uses multiple time slots for a single data call to
achieve bit rates at up to fourfold current speeds of 9.6 kbps. HSCSD enables
datacom services over mobile networks even faster than services over most
modems today via wireline networks.

"The benefits of HSCSD are many," says Fadi Pharaon, Marketing Manager for
Wireless Datacom at Ericsson GSM Systems. "Above all, 'breaking the current
speed limit' means opening up many kinds of new, market-driven wireless
datacom services. We're providing an advanced platform that also enables
operators to attract new customer segments."

HSCSD is especially well suited for time sensitive, real-time services such as
transferring large data files, video-based services, including traffic
surveillance, e-mail and wireless access to the corporate intranet or
Internet.

"For our customers, speed and performance are essential," says Jan Karmaker,
head of network development at Telia Mobile. "Datacom services are an
important part of our business strategy. With the higher speeds made possible
by HSCSD, existing applications will run even more smoothly, and new wireless
applications will be developed. Ericsson has been a key partner for us in
bringing HSCSD live in our net."

Operators have shown significant interest in Ericsson's HSCSD solutions. In
May 1998, Ericsson signed the world's first HSCSD contract, with an Asian
operator, and has since then won more than five other agreements.

With Ericsson's HSCSD solutions only software upgrade is required. Another key
feature of the Ericsson HSCSD implementation is that it by default defines
voice calls (as single time slot calls) to have a higher priority than data
connections (as multiple time slot calls). This is very important since it
allows operators to offer spare network capacity to datacom users. The number
of time slots assigned can be changed during a call; thus optimizing required
network resources.

Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with
communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with
freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140
countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network
operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.
