Well there are unions and they do hold stock market money even
if they don't have much sway directly. In particular, I wonder if they could campaign to exclude companies exhibiting predatory employment practices from the social-choice type of portfolios.
The use of layoffs as a seasonal exercise to smooth earnings reports is the pattern I object to, not any particular layoff.
