Medtronic sees US approval of GEM III in late '99

NEW YORK, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Medtronic Inc. MDT said Wednesday it expected to win U.S. approval in "late 1999" for GEM III, the third generation of the company's dual chamber defibrillator.

Company Chief Financial officer Robert Ryan said the device would be "even smaller and less intrusive" than Medtronic's second-generation GEM II DR model, which was approved Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration months ahead of expectations.

Ryan said the GEM family of defibrillators is designed to prevent sudden death among patients with tacchyarrhythmia problems - severely irregular heartbeats.

The devices are implanted in the pectoral region below the collarbone.
