John, I hadn't seen that. Similar(ish) symptoms but I don't think it is it. I don't use W98 and it is only in office 97 applications. (word and excel so far) everyone suggests reinstalling, but no one gives a good explaination why this should fix it. I am going to try that, but I am not hopeful Thanks for your help Crispin
