Hey Roleigh,

I have been a paid consultant on Y2k issues to a K Street PR firm and I know a little about how media manipulation is done. My
consulting was merely technical although eventually presented in
a political manner. The "politics" of my issue was of the
Washington inter-agency type. However the amount of attempted
news media manipulation verses just plain truth in presenting
slants on various issues in Washington is beyond your wildest
imagination. That actual plain truth sometimes finds its way into
the news is miraculous. "Reporters or Writers" won't admit to it
but they are fed an unending dose of narrowly slanted,
pre-written "pieces" containing a paid for message. Writing and
research against the wall of a time deadline is tough work. All
or part of a "pre-written" piece can save a lot of time, even
allow more time to play. I've heard most humans are human <grin>.
It is my understanding that the amounts spent to get out a
message are in the half-million and up categories. Except for the
fight over Y2k funding, I hadn't noticed much "message" stuff
until last month or so.

This story appears to be a "PR plant" from one of the K street PR firms working for the executive branch or the DNC. Both are very
late to the Y2k table and have a real need to "place the blame"
and/or "muddy the waters" about Y2k as it will be THE issue for
2000 election cycle. The story line is of the "see everybody does
it" verity. The comments about the report card and testing plan
give it away. Remember when the Monica thing got hot last year?
Suddenly the "news" was full of stories about how "all"
presidents had had mistresses - everybody does it. And then in
August after it was crystal clear that Clinton had committed
perjury, the "news" was full of stories about how "all"
presidents lie - everybody does it. Now it's everybody does Y2k
but if you read the story facts the congress situation isn't that
bad for Jan 1999. But if it gets somebody - anybody to do an
in-depth report on how the congress is derelict in their duty
then mission accomplished. Pass the blame.

Keep your eye out for signs of "reasons" to save the children from those right wing religious food hoarders ala Waco or Ruby
Ridge.

The paper is playing up the complete loss of societal brakes after only 4 days of no food and water in Columbia. What they
need is more gun control and less preparation mongers?
