News February 3, 22:56 Eastern Time FEB 3, 1999, M2 Communications - FARNBOROUGH, U.K. -- Lucent Technologies and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace UK have won a major order for 45 DEFINITY(r) Enterprise Communication Servers (ECS) from the Royal Navy. The contract is part of a vessel refurbishment programme which begins in January,1999, and is due for completion by the end of March, 2002.
The DEFINITYs will be "ruggedised" - a modification programme designed to prepare the systems to withstand operational conditions such as constant on-board vibrations - before being installed in a range of vessels, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and submarines.
Royal Navy senior professional technical officer Roger Ferguson said: "The DEFINITY was chosen after a rigorous tendering process which involved five leading PBX manufacturers. We were particularly impressed with the Lucent and DaimlerChrysler solution because it provided a flexible platform that has been tried and tested for many years by the US Navy. It also means our future on-board communications will be interoperable with other NATO allies."
The Royal Navy contract was headed by DaimlerChrysler Aerospace UK which will provide the project management, overseeing both the delivery of Lucent Technologies hardware and operator training. Installation will be carried out by Vector Data Systems.
