Rykodisc's Online Offering Could Rock the Music World
By NICK WINGFIELD
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL INTERACTIVE EDITION

Islandlife's Rykodisc unit plans to sell a portion of its recording catalog online using the MP3 format, one of the biggest endorsements to date for the controversial Internet technology.

Rykodisc, Salem, Mass., intends to convert 200 songs, including tracks from the likes of Frank Zappa, Morphine and other bands, into MP3 and sell them for 99 cents apiece on GoodNoise Corp.'s online music store. Analysts say the move is the strongest show of support yet for MP3 from a well-known record label.
