Does Narrative use Director as the creative tool? Yes, they do. You can make a Director script which reports on the structure of the movie and then use this in constructing a final delivery file in another format. (Rephrased, Director can also be used solely as a design tool rather than a design/delivery tool, because of the way a movie can describe itself to programmers who work in another language.) Why doesn't Narrative just use Shockwave? Because a large part of the value they add is in the back-end tracking component. It's not enough to just make a banner... the server needs to track the responsiveness of each ad, to measure mouseclicks, total time spent in brand exposure, more. Narrative has done pioneering work in serverside tracking of user interaction. Can Narrative use other tools to create their content? Sure, I don't see why not... they can convert to their delivery format and track regardless. They're just taking advantage of the fact that interactive design professionals already know Director.
