Howard, I have a small position in Hecla Mining. My main metals are palladium and platinum and are represented by Implats (IMPAY on the pink sheets). I also own some Newmont and Barrick in the gold area and some South Africa Fund (SOA) that has a decent % of resource stocks in the mix.
Don't know Cobequid.
I think oils are cheap and a good buy here. I would stick with mostly larger names with good financials, with a couple of speculations thrown in for huge upside potential. Arco, SLB, HAL, and UCL are my big name picks. On the spec side, I like Plains Resources, Snyder, Tidewater, and FLC.
Y2K has already been and will be a killer for the IT industry. PC sales grew at a negative rate for the first time ever last year, and Y2K is at least part of the reason. This year will be worse.
Other than that, I do not think Y2K will be earth shattering. Most folks dont' realize that we have humans on the other side of these machines and hopefully, they can always override machine stupidity. The concept of an airplane or an oil tanker not being able to land or make port due to Y2K makes me laugh out loud.
