I plowed through the Brothers K, but it was a little distant for me. Conrad I always liked more in principle than for enjoyment. Coppola's rendering of him was good, though. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". B Traven, now there's a writer. I like Robert Stone too, though he's pretty grim. Ever read "Dog Soldiers"? I got to get his first book out of the library some time, it has some relevance.

Dole was a pretty weak candidate, Neocon, he didn't have the political operatives behind him that Reagan and Bush had. I don't know why. Or maybe the preceding years of constant attacks by the Clinton haters had blunted any effect the normal "Willy Horton" style tactics might have had. Too much crying wolf, or "who killed Vince Foster?".

I don't know, exactly, what you mean by bobbing and weaving. I get lots of people repeating the same question, framed in a way clearly meant to illustrate the moral superiority of the questioner. "When did you stop beating your wife?" "Nevertheless, when did you stop beating your wife?" Everybody knows what Clinton did, and nobody approves of his personal affairs. He shouldn't have lied, but again, I refuse to judge his dissembling outside of the context in which it took place. To throw back JLA's inflammatory metaphor, there is such a thing as justifiable homicide, and to view the Jones suit as some kind of canonical example of the quest for "truth and justice" and "the rule of law" seems as degrading to the ideals of "the rule of law" as Clinton's testimony. I won't say equally degrading, I'm not interested in making fine distinctions given the seedy nature of the whole operation.

What other questions from last night?
