Ballard has been pursuing hydrogen for buses because it makes more sense than hydrogen for autos, not because of reformers. With refuelling at a central depot buses don't face the same infrastructure issues that cars do. Hydrogen is the preferred fuel, creates no emissions at all and can be stored in necessary quantities on the roof of the buses in tanks. Methanol is seen as a tradeoff for autos but the preferred solution for now because it can be more readily integrated in the current infrastructure and can be stored onboard the car in sufficient quantities to give a reasonable range, whereas hydrogen can not.
