Sorry Bill,

I respectfully disagree. Users and especially paid members should have the simple right to know when they have left a site. Or at least know when to expect a jump to another site.

You state:"If Cheeky had simply put the http ref in a link in his profile, as so many people do, rather than a re-direct, the result would be exactly the same..."

A link that appears to be a navigational aid within SI (and acts that way for the large majority of profiles) but that actually re-directs to an off-site page is far different from an obvious link highlighted as a http ref. It is not "exactly" the same. The latter case involves a matter of choice. The former is an unexpected, and in some cases undesired, transfer.

I'm familiar enough with the technology to know this; There is a greater potential for malevolence (as well as creativity) on a page that pretends to be from SI (but isn't) than with a profile that does not use re-direction. It isn't a matter of the uninformed being paranoid. A good portion of the features of all browsers are dedicated to security. The fact that vendors of web software pay such attention to preventing unexpected surprises is cause enough for caution.

Regards,
Michael
