Turns out that you're right, it does appear to be attractive for applications which normally use banks of modems, especially since you would have a "shared software" arrangement. The DSP would also be supplying the sync signals for the multiplexing portion.

In actuality we could assign say, two of these DSPs to a single T-1 and reduce what was 24 individual modems down to one "channel bank" structure.
